GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

Caution: Under some conditions, the ethylene glycol in engine coolant is combustible. To avoid being burned when adding coolant, do not spill the coolant on the exhaust system or engine parts that may be hot.

Notice: Do not use a solution stronger than 70 percent antifreeze. Pure antifreeze will freeze at -22°C (-8°F).

This vehicle was manufactured with GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL™. DEX-COOL™ was developed to last for 240,000 km (150,000 miles) or five years, whichever occurs first. Be sure to use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL™ when coolant is added or changed. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

Use Caterpillar® Heavy-duty coolant for Caterpillar® diesel engines.

A 50/50 mixture of DEX-COOL™ and clean, drinkable water will provide the following features:

    • Freezing protection for temperatures as low as -37°C (-34°F)
    • Boiling protection for temperatures as high as 129°C (265°F)
    • Regulation of the correct engine temperature
    • Protection against rust and corrosion
    • Correct operation of the sensors and the switches to operate

For Caterpillar® diesel engines, refer to the Caterpillar® Operation and Maintenance Manual for the proper cooling system requirements.

Sealer

Add sealant pellets directly to the radiator. Do not add the pellets to the coolant recovery bottle because this may prevent the coolant system from operating properly.

Use sealant pellets when the following conditions occur:

    • Minor water pump weepage
    • Leaks that can not be corrected through normal service procedures
    • The coolant system is drained and refilled with fresh coolant.
    • The water pump is replaced.
