Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment 305mm
Removal Procedure
CAUTION:: If the actuator will not hold pressure, do not unthread the parking
brake cable from the actuator piston. The cable is under tension and unthreading
the cable will cause the cable to spring and can result in personal
injury.
Notice: The park brake must remain released throughout the procedure. Failure
to do this may cause damage to the cable while attempting adjustment.
- Block the vehicle wheels.
- Remove the top cover of the component box.
- Turn the ignition key to the ON position.
- Fully release the parking brake.
- Ensure that the actuator is in the fully released position.
- Place the shift lever into the neutral position (column shift
only).
- Loosen the jam nut on the actuator assembly.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Bottom the two-piece
fitting's smaller 7/8 in nut on the actuator shaft.
Tighten
Tighten the jam nut to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).
- Remove the cotter pin.
- Remove the cable clevis pin.
- Take up the slack in the linkage (16) by moving the operating lever
(6) to the left (toward the parking brake cable) until the clearance is taken
up between the linings (17,25) and the drum.
- Adjust the cable clevis in or out, in order to align the cable
clevis with the hole in the bellcrank. The minimum thread engagement is 14 mm
(0.5 in).
Installation Procedure
- Install the following items:
- Lubricate the clevis where there is contact with the operating
lever (1) and the clevis pin with GM P/N 1051344 or equivalent.
- Remove the wheel blocks.
- Apply the parking brake. Note the holding ability in order to
check the parking brake operation.
- Fully release the parking brake.
- Check that the linings (4) are completely free of the drum.
- Repeat the adjustment if needed.
