Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Seal Replacement Saginaw - 710 Model

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 294148  Size: SH
  1. Remove the Pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).
  2. Remove the Pitman shaft seal snap ring.
  3. Place a pan underneath the steering gear (9) to catch the oil.
  4. Remove the dust seal (1) using a seal puller or a pry tool.
  5. Remove the steel washer (2).
  6. Remove the oil seal (3) using a seal puller or a pry tool. Be careful not to scratch the bore.
  7. Inspect the Pitman shaft (12) surfaces for roughness or pitting. Replace the shaft if it is pitted.
  8. Inspect the housing for any burrs. Remove the burrs before installing the new seal.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 294148  Size: SH
  1. Lubricate the new seal (3) with power steering fluid.
  2. Install the seal on the pitman shaft (12). Use a suitable pipe as a driver. If the service kit is a two-piece seal, be sure to place the nylon inner ring into the recess of the outer seal face.
  3. Install the steel washer (2).
  4. Install the dust seal (1).
  5. Install the snap ring.
  6. Use the following steps in order to center the steering gear:
  7. 6.1. Turn the steering wheel until it stops.
    6.2. Turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction until it stops.

    Count the number of turns.

    6.3. Turn the steering wheel back one-half the number of turns counted in the previous step.
  8. Install the Pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).
  9. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the Pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).

  2. Object Number: 371899  Size: SH
  3. Place a pan underneath the steering gear to catch the oil.
  4. Remove the dust seal (5) using a seal puller or a pry tool.
  5. Remove the retaining ring (6).
  6. Remove the oil seal (4) using a seal puller or a pry tool. Be careful not to scratch the bore.
  7. Inspect the Pitman shaft surfaces for roughness or pitting. Replace the shaft if it is pitted.
  8. Inspect the housing for any burrs. Remove the burrs before installing the new seal.
  9. Notice: Avoid contaminating the power steering system. Clean parts in clean solvent and wipe dry with lint free cloth. Dirt and lint in the power steering fluid can cause early parts failure.

  10. Clean the Pitman shaft and the seal areas in clean solvent.

Installation Procedure

  1. Lubricate the new seal (4) with power steering fluid.

  2. Object Number: 371899  Size: SH
  3. Install the seal (4) on the pitman shaft. Use a suitable pipe as a driver.
  4. Install the retaining ring (6) .
  5. Install the dust seal (5).
  6. Install the Pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).
  7. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
