Tools Required

    • J 4245 Internal Snap Ring Pliers
    • J 8092 Handle
    • J 24655 Bearing Installer and Remover

Disassembly Procedure

    Object Number: 740388 Size: SH
  1. Remove the pitman shaft and side cover. Refer to Steering Gear Pitman Shaft and Housing Cover Replacement - Off Vehicle .

    2. Important: When removing the seals, be careful not to score the steering gear housing bore or leakage may result.

  2. Remove the dust seal (1).

    3. Object Number: 412380 Size: SH
  3. Remove the pitman shaft retaining ring (2) from the steering gear housing (1) using J 4245 .

    4. Object Number: 740390 Size: SH
  4. Remove the backup washer (3) from the steering gear housing (1).
  5. Pry the pitman shaft seal (2) from the steering gear housing (1) using a screwdriver.

    6. Object Number: 446255 Size: SH
  6. Remove the pitman shaft needle bearing assembly (2), if necessary, using J 24655 and J 8092 .

Assembly Procedure

    Object Number: 740392 Size: SH
  1. Install the pitman shaft needle bearing assembly (2), using J 24655 and J 8092 .

    2. Object Number: 740391 Size: SH
  2. Coat the pitman shaft seal (2) and backup washer (3) with grease.
  3. Install the pitman shaft seal (2) onto the steering gear housing (1) using J 6219 .
  4. Install the backup washer (3) onto the steering gear housing (1).

    5. Object Number: 412380 Size: SH

    Important: The pitman shaft seal must not contact the bearing.

  5. Install the pitman shaft retainer ring (2) onto the steering gearing housing (1) using J 4245 .

    6. Object Number: 740389 Size: SH
  6. Install the dust seal (1).
  7. Install the pitman shaft and the side cover. Refer to Steering Gear Pitman Shaft and Housing Cover Replacement - Off Vehicle .
