    Notice: Vehicles involved in accidents resulting in frame damage, major body or sheet metal damage, or where the steering column has been impacted, may also have a damaged or a misaligned steering column.

  1. Inspect the capsules on the steering column bracket assembly.
  2. Replace the bracket if either of the following conditions exist:
  3. • The capsule is not within 1.59 mm (1/16 in) from the bottom of the slots (1).
    • The bolt head contacts the surface (2) and the shear load is increased.

  4. Inspect the jacket collapse (1).
  5. Measure the jacket collapse dimension.
  6. Install a new jacket if the current jacket is not within the specifications.

  7. Object Number: 217506  Size: SH
  8. Inspect the steering shaft (1) for sheared injected plastic.
  9. Replace the components if sheared plastic is found.

  10. Object Number: 215623  Size: SH
  11. Inspect for any frame damage which could cause a bent steering shaft (1).
  12. Perform the following procedures in order to inspect for steering shaft runout:
  13. 9.1. Remove the intermediate shaft.
    9.2. Hold a ruler against the lower end of the steering shaft.

    A dial indicator may be used in place of a ruler.

    9.3. Rotate the steering wheel.
    9.4. The runout must not exceed 1.59 mm (1/16 in).
