Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 23653-SIR Lock Plate Compressor


    Object Number: 376286  Size: SH
  1. Turn the front wheels straight ahead.
  2. Place the ignition switch in the "LOCK" position and remove the key.
  3. Mark the steering wheel shaft (5) and the steering wheel (1) in order to allow installation in the same position as when removed.
  4. Remove the steering wheel (1). Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .

  6. Remove the bearing retainer (1) using J 23653-SIR .

  7. Object Number: 378804  Size: SH
  8. Remove the steering shaft spacer (1).
  9. Remove the turn signal cancel cam (2).
  10. Remove the upper bearing spring (3).
  11. Remove the upper bearing inner race seat (4).
  12. Remove the inner race (5).

  14. Remove the steering column filler panel.

  15. Object Number: 376294  Size: SH
  16. Remove the support bracket (2) if necessary, to gain access to the wire harness.

  17. Object Number: 378811  Size: SH
  18. Remove the wire protector.
  19. Remove the wire harness assembly straps.
  20. Disconnect the turn signal and multifunction switch electrical connector.

  22. Remove the round washer head screw (2).
  23. Remove the signal switch arm assembly (3).
  24. Remove the pan head 6-lobed socket screws (1).

  26. Pull the turn signal switch assembly connector through the column and remove the turn signal switch assembly.

Installation Procedure

  1. Pull the turn signal switch assembly connector through the column.
  2. Install the turn signal switch assembly onto the steering shaft assembly.

  3. Object Number: 378815  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the pan head 6-lobed socket screws (1).
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 3.5 N·m (31 lb in).

  6. Lubricate and install the signal switch arm assembly (3).
  7. Install the round washer head screw (2).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the screw to 2.5 N·m (21 lb in).

  9. Install the wire protector.
  10. Install the wire harness assembly straps.
  11. Connect the turn signal and multifunction switch electrical connector.

  12. Object Number: 376294  Size: SH
  13. Install the support bracket (2) if removed.
  14. Install the support bracket bolts and nuts.
  15. Tighten

        • Tighten the steering column bracket bolt/screw to 13 N·m (115 lb in).
        • Tighten the steering column support bracket nut to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  16. Install the steering column filler panel.

  17. Object Number: 378805  Size: SH
  18. Install the inner race (5).
  19. Install the upper bearing inner race seat (4).
  20. Install the upper bearing spring (3).
  21. Lubricate the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2) with lithium grease.
  22. Install the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2).
  23. Install the steering shaft spacer (1).

  25. Install the bearing retainer using J 23653-SIR .

  26. Object Number: 376286  Size: SH
  27. Align the marks which were made during the removal procedure and install the steering wheel (1). Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
