Did you perform the Instrument Panel Cluster Diagnostic System Check?

  1. Start the engine.
  2. Observe the transmission fluid temperature gauge.

Does the transmission fluid temperature gauge display that the fluid temperature is within the normal operating range?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the transmission fluid temperature gauge sensor.
  3. Start the engine.

Does the transmission fluid temperature gauge display at or below the specified value?

40°C (104°F)

Connect a test lamp between the ignition 3 voltage circuit of the transmission fluid temperature gauge and a good ground.

Does the test light illuminate?

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Connect a 3 amp fused jumper wire between the transmission fluid temperature gauge sensor signal circuit and the transmission fluid temperature gauge sensor ground circuit.
  3. Start the engine.

Does the transmission fluid temperature gauge display at or above the specified value?

120° C (248° F)

Test the transmission fluid temperature gauge sensor signal circuit for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the transmission fluid temperature gauge sensor signal circuit for an open, for a short to voltage or for a high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the transmission fluid temperature gauge ground circuit for an open or for a high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Use the scan tool in order to clear the PCM DTCs.
  2. Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
