Generator Upper Mounting Bolt Breakage (Replace Bolt/Install Brace Rod Assembly)

Models:1996-2000 Chevrolet and GMC C6-7 Conventional Medium Duty Models
With Gas Engine (VINs B, D, M, P -- RPOs L21, LP4, LR0, LS0)


Condition

Some drivers may comment that the generator upper mounting bolt is breaking.

Correction

To correct this condition, replace the broken bolt. Install a new rear generator bracket and add a brace rod assembly. Use the procedure and part numbers listed below.

  1. Remove the generator assembly. Refer to the Generator Replacement procedure in the applicable Service Manual.
  2. Remove the generator-adjusting bracket.
  3. Remove the generator/AC compressor bracket assembly.
  4. Remove the rear generator bracket.
  5. Install the new rear generator bracket, P/N 15766728 (VINs M, P -- RPOs LR0, LS0) or 15766727 (VINs D, B -- RPOs LP4, L21).
  6. Install the generator/AC compressor bracket assembly and bolt.

    7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  7. Install the generator adjusting bracket and bolt.

    8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  8. Install the brace rod assembly, P/N 15764193, using bolt, P/N 09424338, washer, P/N 15650963, and nut, P/N 11505992, as shown in the illustration. Apply a medium strength threadlocker, P/N 12345382, to the threads of the brace rod at the attachment to the rear generator bracket.
  9. Install the generator assembly. Refer to the Generator Replacement procedure in the applicable Service Manual.
