Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 659051 Size: SH
  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Control - 4.3 L, Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.8 L, 5.3 L, and 6.0 L or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Control - 8.1 L.
  3. Remove the surge tank overflow hose.

  4. Disconnect the low coolant level switch electrical connector (3).

    5. Object Number: 659059 Size: SH
  5. Reposition the surge tank inlet and outlet hose clamps.
  6. If equipped with a 4.3 L, 4.8 L, 5.3 L, 6.0 L, or 8.1 L engine, remove the surge tank inlet (1) and outlet (2) hoses from the surge tank.

  7. If equipped with a 6.6 L engine, remove the surge tank inlet hose (1) from the surge tank.

  8. If equipped with a 6.6 L engine, remove the surge tank outlet hose from the surge tank.

    9. Object Number: 362165 Size: SH
  9. Remove the surge tank bolt and nut.
  10. Remove the surge tank.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 362165 Size: SH
  1. Install the surge tank.

    2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  2. Install the surge tank bolt and nut.

    3. Tighten
    Tighten the surge tank bolt and nut to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  3. If equipped with a 6.6 L engine, install the surge tank outlet hose to the surge tank.

    4. Object Number: 721988 Size: SH
  4. If equipped with a 6.6 L engine, install the surge tank inlet hose (1) to the surge tank.

    5. Object Number: 659059 Size: SH
  5. If equipped with a 4.3 L, 4.8 L, 5.3 L, 6.0 L, or 8.1 L engine, install the surge tank inlet (1) and outlet (2) hoses to the surge tank.
  6. Position the surge tank inlet and outlet hose clamps.

    7. Object Number: 674702 Size: SH
  7. Connect the low coolant level switch electrical connector (3).

  8. Install the surge tank overflow hose.
  9. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Control - 4.3 L, Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.8 L, 5.3 L, and 6.0 L or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Control - 8.1 L.
  10. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
