Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Disassemble - Off Vehicle Floor Shift

J 23653-SIR Lock Plate Compressor

    Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Disabling the SIR System .
  2. Important: Let the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil hang freely after removal.

  3. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  4. Compress the shaft lock shield assembly (2) using J 23653-SIR .
  5. Remove the bearing retainer (1) from the steering column shaft assembly.
  6. Discard the bearing retainer (1).
  7. Remove J 23653-SIR from the steering column shaft assembly.

  8. Object Number: 318239  Size: SH
  9. Remove the following parts from the steering column shaft assembly:
  10. 7.1. The shaft lock shield assembly (5)
    7.2. The turn signal cancel cam assembly (4)
    7.3. The upper bearing spring (3)
    7.4. The upper bearing inner race seat (2)
    7.5. The inner race (1)

  1. Disable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Disabling the SIR System .
  2. Important: Let the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil hang freely after removal.

  3. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Coil Centering - Off Vehicle .
  4. Compress the cam orientation using J 23653-SIR .
  5. Remove the bearing retainer from the steering column shaft assembly.
  6. Discard the bearing retainer.
  7. RemoveJ 23653-SIR from the steering column shaft assembly.

  9. Remove the following parts from the steering column shaft assembly:
  10. 7.1. The cam orientation plate (5)
    7.2. The turn signal cancel cam assembly (4)
    7.3. The upper bearing spring (3)
    7.4. The upper bearing inner race seat (2)
    7.5. The inner race (1)
