    • J 44643 Flywheel Holding Tool
    • J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 660308  Size: SH
  1. Remove the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission - Allison.
  2. Install the J 44643 in the starter opening in order to hold the flywheel.

  3. Object Number: 660311  Size: SH
  4. Loosen the flywheel bolts.
  5. Remove the J 44643 .
  6. Remove the flywheel bolts and discard.
  7. Remove the flywheel washer.
  8. Remove the flywheel assembly.

Inspection and Repair


    Object Number: 663136  Size: SH
  1. Clean the flywheel assembly.
  2. Inspect the flywheel assembly for cracks or excessive wear on the teeth.
  3. Replace the flywheel assembly if any concerns exist.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 660311  Size: SH
  1. Install the flywheel to the crankshaft.
  2. Install the flywheel washer to the flywheel.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install NEW flywheel bolts.

  5. Object Number: 660308  Size: SH
  6. Install the J 44643 to lock the flywheel.

  7. Object Number: 663928  Size: SH
  8. Use the following steps and the proper sequence to tighten the bolts:
  9. Tighten

    1. Tighten the flywheel bolts to 78 N·m (58 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the flywheel bolts to 60 degrees using the J 36660-A .
    3. Tighten the flywheel bolts again to 60 degrees using the J 36660-A .
  10. Install the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission - Allison.
