Diagnostic Aids

A rattling or clicking noise that is coming from the clutch or the transmission may indicate that there is oil on the driven plate damper or the clutch disc. The clutch disc may have been damaged or the disc plate springs and diaphragm springs may be weak . If there is excessive rattling, it may indicate an internal transmission concern.

Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. This step inspects the clutch system components and the operation of the clutch system.

  2. This step inspects for oil leaks in the clutch system.

Did you review the clutch symptom operations and perform the necessary inspections?

Go to Step 2

Inspect for transmission fluid on the driven plate damper.

Is there fluid on the driven plate damper?

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 3

Inspect the transmission for noise.

Is the transmission OK?

Go to Step 7

  1. Repair the source of the leak. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement .
  2. Install a new driven disc.

Does the clutch still rattle?

Go to Step 5

System OK

Remove the clutch disc and inspect for the following conditions:

    • Damaged diaphragm springs
    • Worn clutch disc

Are the diaphragm springs damaged or the clutch disc worn?

Go to Step 6

System OK

Replace the necessary components. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement .

Did you find and repair the condition?

Go to Step 7

  1. Install the transmission. Refer to the following:
  2. •  Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission NV - 3500
    •  Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission NV - 4500
    •  Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission ZF S6 - 650
  3. Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
