Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 309158  Size: SH
  1. Drain the engine coolant and the engine block. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  2. Remove the oil pan skid plate bolts and plate.

  3. Object Number: 328107  Size: SH
  4. Remove the crossmember bolts and crossmember, 2-wheel drive (2WD) vehicle shown.

  5. Object Number: 487521  Size: SH
  6. Remove the crossmember bolts and crossmember, 4-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle shown.

  7. Object Number: 660299  Size: SH
  8. Remove the oil filter.
  9. Remove the left front tire. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  10. Remove the left fender wheelhouse inner panel. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body Front End.

  11. Object Number: 660519  Size: SH
  12. Remove the water pump outlet pipe nuts from the water pump.
  13. Remove the engine wiring harness retainer from the inner stud.

  14. Object Number: 739098  Size: SH
  15. Remove the oil cooler adapter nuts from the flywheel housing.
  16. Remove the oil cooler adapter bolts from the oil cooler adapter and the oil cooler.
  17. Remove the oil cooler adapter.

  19. Remove the oil cooler bolts.
  20. Remove the oil cooler with the water pump outlet pipe.
  21. Remove the oil cooler O-ring seals.
  22. Remove the water pump outlet pipe from the oil cooler.
  23. Remove the water pump outlet pipe O-ring.
  24. If required, clean and inspect the oil filter adapter/oil cooler. Refer to Oil Filter Adapter and Oil Cooler Assembly Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 739097  Size: SH
  1. Install NEW O-rings to the oil cooler.
  2. Install a NEW O-ring onto the water pump outlet pipe.
  3. Lubricate the O-ring with engine coolant.
  4. Install the water pump outlet pipe to the oil cooler.
  5. Install the gasket for the water pump outlet pipe on the water pump.
  6. Install the oil cooler.
  7. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the oil cooler bolts.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  10. Install a NEW seal in the coolant duct to the flywheel housing.
  11. Install a NEW gasket for the coolant duct to the oil cooler.
  12. Install the nuts for the coolant duct to flywheel housing.
  13. Install the bolts for the coolant duct to oil cooler.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts/nuts to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  15. Install the engine wiring harness retainer on the water pump outlet pipe to water pump inner stud.
  16. Install the water pump outlet pipe nuts.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  18. Install the oil filter.
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the oil filter to contact plus 1 to 1¼ turns.


    Object Number: 487521  Size: SH
  20. Install the crossmember and bolts, 4WD vehicle shown.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).

  22. Install the crossmember and bolts, 2WD vehicle shown.
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).


    Object Number: 309158  Size: SH
  24. Install the oil pan skid plate and bolts.
  25. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  26. Install the left fender wheelhouse inner panel. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body Front End.
  27. Install the left front tire. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  28. Lower the vehicle.
  29. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  30. Inspect the engine oil level and add as necessary.
