Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement - Left Side w/oNYS
Removal Procedure
- Release the park brake.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- For
all 15 series vehicles, relieve the tension from the park brake cable by pulling
down on the park brake cable in front of the equalizer and removing the left park
brake cable from the equalizer bar.
- For 25/35 series vehicles, disable the park brake
cable automatic adjuster. Refer to
Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Disabling
.
- For 25/35 series vehicles, disconnect the cable at the equalizer.
- Remove
the cable from the mounting bracket by depressing the locking tabs.
- Remove the cable at the shock absorber
bracket by removing the bolt.
- Perform the following procedure to remove
the cable (2) from the backing plate (4):
8.1. | Compress the spring (3) by pushing towards the lever (1). |
8.2. | Depress the locking tabs. |
8.3. | Pull the cable housing out of the backing plate (4). |
8.4. | Remove the cable (2) through the slot in the backing plate. |
- Remove the park brake cable (2) from the lever (1).
- Remove the cable from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Install the cable to the vehicle.
- Install the park brake cable (2)
to the lever (1).
- Perform the following procedure to install the cable (2) to the
backing plate (4):
3.1. | Compress the spring (3) by pushing towards the lever (1). |
3.2. | Route the cable (2) through the slot in the backing plate. |
3.3. | Push the cable housing into the backing plate (4) until the locking
tabs snap into place. |
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the cable at the shock absorber bracket and install the bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
- Install
the cable to the mounting bracket until the locking tabs snap into place.
- For 25/35 series vehicles, connect the cable at the equalizer.
- For 25/35 series vehicles, enable the park brake
cable automatic adjuster. Refer to
Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Enabling
.
- For
all 15 series vehicles, pull down on the park brake cable in front of the equalizer
and install the left park brake cable to the equalizer bar.
- Remove the safety stands.
- Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.
- Adjust the park brake cable. Refer to
Park Brake Adjustment
.

Removal Procedure
- Release the park brake.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Relieve the tension from the park brake cable by pulling down on the park brake
cable in front of the equalizer and removing the left park brake cable from the equalizer
bar.
- Remove
the cable from the mounting bracket by depressing the locking tabs.
- Remove the cable at the lower shock absorber
mount by removing the bolt.
- Remove the rear cable mounting bracket
bolt.
- Remove the cable from the lever.
- Remove the cable (2) from the rear brake
cable mounting bracket (3) by depressing the locking tabs (1) on the brake cable.
- Remove
the cable from the guides and the body mounts.
Installation Procedure
- Install the new brake cable (2) into the
rear brake cable mounting bracket (3) by pushing the cable into place until the
locking tabs (1) snap into place.
- Install the park brake cable to the lever.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring

- Install the rear park brake cable bracket bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the rear park brake cable bracket bolt to 61 N·m (45 lb ft).
- Install the park brake cable and the bolt
to the lower shock absorber mount.
Tighten
Tighten the park brake cable bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
- Install
the park brake cable taking care to correctly route the cable though the guides and
the body mounts.
- Pull down on the park brake cable in front of the equalizer and install the
left park brake cable to the equalizer bar.
- Remove the safety stands.
- Lower the vehicle.
