Front Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement 1500 Series

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1497134  Size: SH
  1. Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
  2. If the fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point, and the minimum allowable level, no fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding.
  3. If the fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point, and the minimum allowable level, remove fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  6. Compress the brake caliper pistons.
  7. 6.1. Install 2 large C-clamps over the top of the caliper housing and against the back of the outboard pad.
    6.2. Slowly tighten the C-clamps until the pistons are pushed completely into the caliper bores.
    6.3. Remove the C-clamps from the caliper.

    Important: 

       • DO NOT use any air tools to remove or install the guide pin bolts. Use hand tools ONLY.
       • Install an open end wrench to hold the caliper guide pin in line with the brake caliper while removing or installing the caliper guide pin bolt. DO NOT allow the open end wrench to come in contact with the brake caliper. Allowing the open end wrench to come in contact with the brake caliper will cause a pulsation when the brakes are applied.

  8. Using an open end wrench to hold the guide pin, remove the 2 brake caliper guide pin bolts.
  9. Notice: Refer to Brake Caliper Notice in the Preface section.

    Caution: Do not depress the brake pedal with the brake rotors/calipers and/or the brake drums removed. Damage to the brake system may result. If brake system damage occurs and is not repaired, vehicle damage and/or personal injury or death may result.

  10. Remove the caliper from the caliper bracket.
  11. Support the caliper with heavy mechanic's wire or equivalent. DO NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake hose from the caliper.

  12. Remove the brake pads from the caliper bracket.
  13. Remove the anti-rattle clips.

  15. Remove the brake caliper bracket bolts.

  17. Remove the brake caliper bracket.
  18. Remove any contaminants or foreign material from the inside ends of the caliper bracket.
  19. Clean the mounting surface and threads of the caliper bracket.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1479408  Size: SH
  1. Install the brake caliper bracket.
  2. Perform the following procedure before installing the brake caliper bracket bolts.
  3. 2.1. Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch.
    2.2. Clean the threads of the bolt with denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
    2.3. Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) to the threads of the bolt.

  4. Install the brake caliper bracket bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 180 N·m (133 lb ft).

  6. Install the anti-rattle clips to the brake caliper bracket.
  7. Install the brake pads.
  8. Slide the brake pads in until they contact the rotor.

  10. Install the caliper to the caliper bracket.
  11. Important: 

       • DO NOT use any air tools to remove or install the guide pin bolts. Use hand tools ONLY.
       • Install an open end wrench to hold the caliper guide pin in line with the brake caliper while removing or installing the caliper guide pin bolt. DO NOT allow the open end wrench to come in contact with the brake caliper. Allowing the open end wrench to come in contact with the brake caliper will cause a pulsation when the brakes are applied.

  12. Using an open end wrench to hold the guide pins, install the 2 brake caliper guide pin bolts.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).

  14. Ensure the brake caliper guide pin seals (4) are fully seated in the groove of the brake caliper guide pins (5), and the guide pins move smoothly in the bores of the brake caliper bracket (3).
  15. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  16. Lower the vehicle.
  17. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
  18. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  19. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 12-13 until a firm pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the caliper pistons and pads.
  20. Fill the master cylinder reservoir to the proper level with clean brake fluid, if necessary. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling .

Front Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement 25/3500 Series

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 370154  Size: SH
  1. Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
  2. If the fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point, and the minimum allowable level, no fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding.
  3. If the fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point, and the minimum allowable level, remove fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
  4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  5. Compress the brake caliper pistons.
  6. 5.1. Install 2 large C-clamps over the top of the caliper housing and against the back of the outboard pad.
    5.2. Slowly tighten the C-clamps until the pistons are pushed completely into the caliper bores.
    5.3. Remove the C-clamps from the caliper.

  7. Remove the brake caliper bolts.
  8. Support the caliper with heavy mechanic's wire or equivalent. DO NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper.

  9. Remove the brake pads from the caliper bracket.
  10. Remove the anti-rattle clips.

  11. Object Number: 794150  Size: SH
  12. Remove the brake caliper bracket bolts (2).
  13. Remove the brake caliper bracket (1).
  14. Remove any contaminants or foreign material from the inside ends of the brake caliper bracket.
  15. Clean the mounting surface and threads of the brake caliper bracket.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 794150  Size: SH
  1. Install the brake caliper bracket (1).
  2. Perform the following procedure before installing the brake caliper bracket bolts.
  3. 2.1. Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch.
    2.2. Clean the threads of the bolt with denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
    2.3. Apply Threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) to the threads of the bolt.

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the brake caliper bracket bolts (2).
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 300 N·m (221 lb ft).

  6. Install the anti-rattle clips to the brake caliper bracket.
  7. Install the brake pads.
  8. Slide the brake pads in until they contact the rotor.

  9. Object Number: 789166  Size: SH
  10. Install the brake caliper bolts.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 108 N·m (80 lb ft).

  12. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  13. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
  14. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  15. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 10-11 until a firm pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the caliper pistons and pads.
  16. Fill the master cylinder reservoir to the proper level with clean brake fluid, if necessary. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling .
