Turbo Heat Shield Rattle Noise Heard at 1100 to 1200 RPM - keywords 6.6 6.6L buzz cooler EGR exhaust

Subject:Turbo Heat Shield Rattle Noise Heard at 1100 to 1200 RPM

Models:2006 Chevrolet Silverado
2006 GMC Sierra
Equipped with a 6.6 Duramax Diesel Engine (VIN 2 - RPO LLY)



The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

A rattle or buzz type noise may be heard at 1100 to 1200 RPM.

The turbo heat shield may contact the EGR cooler and induce a metal to metal rattle type noise.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Use the procedure below to re-align the turbo heat shield.

  1. Loosen the 3 bolts on top of the heat shield that attach the shield to the turbocharger turbine housing.
  2. Without completely removing the bolts, push the heat shield away from the EGR cooler until the heat shield holes contact the bolts.
  3. Re-torque the heat shield bolts insuring the heat shield does not move back toward the EGR cooler.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
