EXPANSION OF 700R4 SERVICE REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION

MODELS: 1982-1986 MODEL YEARS

The 700-R4 Service Replacement Transmission Assembly (SRTA) Program has been expanded. Effective November 18, 1985, most 1984 through 1986 model year applications have been added to existing 1982 and 1983 models. These additional SRTA models can be ordered from the local WDDGM Parts Distribution Center (PDC) using the same procedures currently in place for 1982 and 1983 models. Complete model coverage for 1982 through 1986 model years will become effective in early 1986. At that time, announcements relating to further expansion of the Program will be made via GMPD Bulletins and Parts Catalog updates from WDDGM. A listing of applications is provided in Figure No. 7 of this bulletin. Unit replacement through SRTA represents an additional method of service GMC Truck dealers can offer the customer in instances where major overhaul is necessary. Additional program details are provided in this bulletin as follows:

GENERAL GUIDELINES

NOTE: For SRTA use in warranty/policy applications, refer to Dealer General Letter Number 370, dated July 27, 1984, for guidelines. In non-warranty/policy situations:

- Replacement or Overhaul

Parts needed to perform unit replacement or internal overhaul on a 700-R4 transmission are available through your local Parts Distribution Center (PDC).

- Transmission conditions which should be considered for SRTA usage:

- All repairs in which the projected cost to repair exceeds the cost of SRTA replacement.

- Indications that major internal repair is required.

- Dealer 700-R4 transmission repairs should include:

- All in-vehicle serviceable items.

- All internal repairs which are projected to cost less than a SRTA replacement.

- Available Technician Training Courses

There are two technical training courses offered by GM Product Service Training on the 700-R4 transmission for GMC service technicians. These courses feature theory of operation, overhaul, up-to-date service bulletin information in addition to extensive diagnosis information, and are available at the local GM Training Center.

Course # Length Title -------- ------ ----- 17001.11 2 Days 700-R4 Automatic Transmission

Description - Automatic transmission experience required. Course covers the construction, diagnosis, overhaul and adjustments of the transmission and converter clutch.

17201.11 1 Day 700-R4 Automatic Transmission Update

Description - For automatic transmission specialists. Previous 700-R4 training and experience required or course #17001.11. Includes all 700-R4 revisions affecting diagnosis and service with a workshop covering all service bulletin information issued to date.

Contact your GMC Zone Office or District Service Manager for schedule and enrollment of service technicians in these courses.

COOLER FLUSHING

IMPORTANT

Transmission oil cooler flushing should be performed whenever a transmission major overhaul or SRTA replacement occurs. It is ESSENTIAL to flush the cooler if fluid contamination is suspected or in any case of pump or torque converter replacement.

- SRTA PROCESSING PROCEDURES

Each SRTA unit will be shipped in a container that is to be reused for core return of the original 700-R4 assembly to the WDDGM Parts Distribution Center (PDC). A SRTA Information Packet envelope is included with shipment of each SRTA unit. The contents of the wire tagged envelope are to be removed and used as described with each illustration that follows.

- SRTA PROCESSING PROCEDURE - CORE EXCHANGE RETURN PROCEDURE

This provides detailed instructions for the GM dealer handling of the SRTA and original 700-R4 units. The sheet can be discarded after use.

- SRTA PROCESSING PROCEDURES - CUSTOMER WARRANTY INFORMATION ENVELOPE

Contains a courtesy letter, Limited Warranty Information, as well as Customer Information sheet (for feedback data) and pre-addressed return mailing envelope. A dealer representative is to explain contents of the envelope to the customer, provide a copy of the repair order for record purposes and return all six items to the customers after installation of the SRTA unit.

- SRTA PROCESSING PROCEDURES - FAILURE ANALYSIS INFORMATION SHEET

This double-sided report form is to be given to the dealer service manager and/or technician for data entry. Fill out the form as completely as possible to provide information which can be used for analysis purposes. This valuable input can result in future product refinements through corrective action. Insert the completed form and a copy of the repair order in the SRTA Information Packet envelope, reseal the envelope and wire tag it to the original transmission bellhousing being returned to WDDGM for core exchange.

- SRTA PROCESSING PROCEDURES - WDDGM INFORMATION CARD TAG

Completely fill out the dealer name, address, phone number and WDDGM parts code information on the WDDGM Information Card Tag. Then wire tag it to the original transmission bellhousing being returned for core exchange separately from the SRTA Information Packet envelope. This card will be utilized by WDDGM for core exchange credit and processing purposes.

- SRTA MODEL APPLICATION CHART AND PARTS ORDERING

SRTA coverage is available for 1982 through 1986 700-R4 models. The 700-R4 Transmission Identification Information Illustration (refer to Figure No. 6), and the Replacement Application Chart (refer to Figure No. 7), will assist in selecting the correct SRTA unit to order from the local WDDGM Parts Distribution Center (PDC).

SRTA Replacement Models for 1982 through 1986 model years that will be available early in 1986 are identified by an asterisk(*).

To use the chart below, find the original transmission model year and model number and use the corresponding SRTA model number. For example, if the original transmission model year is 1984, model 4PQ, use SRTA model number 6PL, Part Number 8659900.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
