Definition: starter solenoid clicks and engine will not crank or cranks slowly.

  1. Disconnect the connector at the Ignition Coil (gasoline engines) or the Engine Shutoff Solenoid (diesel engine).
  2. Connect a voltmeter to the battery positive and negative terminals.
  3. Place the ignition switch in START for 15 seconds.
  4. Observe the voltmeter indication, then place the ignition switch in OFF.

Is the reading less than the value specified?

9.6 Volts

Go to Step 2

Go to Step 5

  1. Perform the Battery Load Test.
  2. If the vehicle has a diesel engine, then test the auxiliary battery also.

Does the battery pass the Battery Load Test?

Go to Step 3

Go to Step 4

Replace the starter motor.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

Replace the battery and/or the auxiliary battery.

Are the repairs complete?

--

System OK

  1. Disconnect the BLK (50) cable from battery ground G110.
  2. Connect a voltmeter between the battery negative terminal and the battery ground G100.
  3. Place the ignition switch in START and observe the voltage.

Is the voltage more that the value specified?

0.5 Volts

Go to Step 6

Go to Step 7

Locate and repair the high resistance in the BLK (50) wire between the battery and battery ground G100.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

--

  1. Reconnect the BLK (50) wire to the battery ground G110.
  2. Disconnect the BLK (50) wire from the battery ground G100.
  3. Connect a voltmeter between the battery negative terminal and the battery ground G110.
  4. Place the ignition in START and observe the voltage.

Is the voltage more that the voltage specified?

0.5 Volts

Go to Step 8

Go to Step 9

Locate and repair the high resistance in BLK (50) wire between the battery and battery ground G110.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

--

Reconnect the BLK (50) wire at the battery ground G100.

Does the vehicle have a diesel engine?

--

Go to Step 10

  1. Connect a voltmeter between the auxiliary battery negative terminal and the auxiliary battery ground G300.
  2. Place the ignition switch in START and observe the voltage.

Is the voltage more than the voltage specified?

0.5 Volts

Go to Step 11

Locate and repair the high resistance in the BLK (50) wire between the auxiliary battery and the auxiliary battery ground G300.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

--

  1. Connect a voltmeter from the starter solenoid terminal B to the battery negative terminal.
  2. Place the ignition switch in START (note clicking of the solenoid).
  3. Observe the voltage.

Is the voltage more than the voltage specified?

9.0 Volts

Locate and repair the open in the BLK (1) wire between the battery and the starter.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

--
