Removal Procedure
- Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to
Crankshaft Balancer Replacement
.
- Remove the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Cooling
and Radiator.
- Loosen the oil pan.
- Remove the crankshaft position sensor. Refer to Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Replacement
.
- Remove the engine front cover bolts.
Important: Use care when removing the engine front cover from the front of the
oil pan seal.
- Remove the engine front cover.
- Clean the varnish and the sludge buildup from the engine front
cover area.
Installation Procedure
Important: Any time the engine front cover is removed, replace it. If the cover
that was removed is reinstalled, oil leaks may develop.
- Use care when engaging the front of the oil pan seal with the bottom
of the front cover.
- Lubricate the front of the oil pan seal with engine oil to aid
reassembly.
- Install the new engine front cover.
- Install the engine front cover bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the engine front cover to block bolts to 12 N·m
(106 lb in).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the crankshaft position sensor. Refer to Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Replacement

- Install the oil pan. Refer to
Oil Pan Installation
.
- Install the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Cooling
and Radiator.
- Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Installation
.
