CAMPAIGN: DOOR STRIKER FAILS REPLACE DOOR STRIKER NUT

MODELS: 1988 CHEV. & GMC C/K TRUCKS

General Motors of Canada has determined that certain 1988 Chev. & GMC C/K Trucks do not conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle safety Standard (FMVSS) 206, "Door Locks and Door Retention Components." The trucks were assembled with door Striker nuts which may be cracked or broken. In the event of a collision impact, a cracked or broken striker nut could allow the door to unexpectedly open.

To prevent this condition from occurring it will be necessary to replace the existing door striker nuts an all involved vehicles.

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

Involved are 1988 CK Trucks produced within the following VIN breakpoints:

Make Plant From Throuah

GMC Oshawa J1501612 J1502054

Chevrolet Oshawa J1105100 J1106751

All affected vehicles have been identified by the VIN listing provided to involved Dealers with this bulletin. Any Dealer not receiving a listing was not shipped any of the affected vehicles.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY:

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your Dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the Dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

CAMPAIGN PROCEDURE:

Refer to Section 4 of the Service Policies and Procedures Manual for the detailed procedure on handling Product Campaigns. Dealers are requested to complete the campaign on all transfers as soon as possible.

OWNER NOTIFICATION:

All owners of record at the time of campaign release are shown on the attached computer listing and have been notified by first class mail from General Motors. The listings provided are for campaign activity only and should not be used for any other purpose.

Parts required to complete this modification should be ordered through regular channels, as follows:

PARTS AND LABOUR CLAIM INFORMATION:

Credit for the campaign work performed will be paid upon receipt of a properly completed campaign claim card, RAPID terminal or DCS transmission in accordance with the following:

Replace Door Lock Striker Nut:-

2A Standard Cab with Full Interior .9 (RPO YE9/Z62)

3A Standard Cab with Base Interior .3

4A Extended Cab with Rear Seat .4 (RPO AM7)

5A Extended Cab without Rear Seat .9

Time allowance includes 0.1 hour for Dealer administrative detail associated with this campaign. Parts credit will be based on Dealer net plus 30% to cover parts handling.

SERVICE PROCEDURE - FIGURE 1

The door lock striker nut (threaded plate) must be replaced on both left and right side of trucks. This nut is located inside the door pillar.

Special Tools - J-23457, Door Striker Wrench.

Standard Cab With Full Interior Trim (RPO YE9/Z6gl

- Mark the position of the striker bolt washer on the door pillar.

- Remove jack assembly and tray.

- Remove coat hook.

- Remove seat belt guide.

- Remove seat belt retractor.

- Remove rear window lower moulding.

- Remove side trim panel screws.

- Remove rear most screw from sill plate.

- Remove side trim panel.

- Remove the striker bolt. Discard the nut (threaded plate).

- Repeat required steps to remove the nut (threaded plate) on the opposite door.

Installation

- Align the striker bolt washer with the previously made mark. Install the new nut (threaded plate). Plate must remain in a horizontal position while 63 N.m (47 lb. ft.) of torque is applied to the striker assembly. Repeat on the opposite door.

- Reinstall trim pieces, jack and tray.

- Reinstall seat belt retractor assemblies. Tighten bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb. ft.).

- Reinstall seat belt guides. Tighten bolt to 50 N.m (37 lb. ft.).

Standard Cab With Base Interior Trim

- Mark the position of the striker bolt washer on the door pillar.

- Remove the striker bolt. Discard the nut (threaded plate).

- Align the striker bolt washer with the previously made mark. Install the new nut (threaded plate). Plate must remain in a horizontal position while 63 N.m (47 lb. ft.) of torque is applied to the striker assembly.

- Repeat above procedure on the opposite door.

Extended Cab With Rear Seat (RPO AM7)

- Mark the position of the striker bolt washer on the door pillar.

- Remove the striker bolt. Discard the nut (threaded plate).

- Align the striker bolt washer with the previously made mark. Install the new nut (threaded plate). Plate must remain in a horizontal position while 63 N.m (47 lb. ft.) of torque is applied to the striker assembly.

- Repeat above procedure on the opposite door.

Extended Cab Without Rear Seat

- Mark the position of the striker bolt washer on the door pillar.

- Remove seat belt retractor.

- Remove jack assembly and tray.

- Remove lower side panel trim piece.

- Remove the striker bolt. Discard the nut (threaded plate).

- Repeat required steps to remove the nut (threaded plate) on the opposite door.

Installation

- Align the striker bolt washer with the previously made mark. Install the new nut (threaded plate). Plate must remain in a horizontal position while 63 N.m (47 lb. ft.) of torque is applied to the striker assembly. Repeat on the opposite door.

- Reinstall trim pieces, jack and tray.

- Reinstall seat belt retractor assemblies. Tighten bolts tO 50 N.m (37 lb. ft.).

INSTALLATION OF CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Clean surface of radiator upper mounting panel and apply a Campaign Identification Label. Make sure the correct campaign number is inserted on the label. This will indicate that the campaign has been completed.
