CAMPAIGN: FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER NUTS LOOSEN REPLACE W/TORQUE

MODELS: 1988 CHEV. & GMC K MODEL TRUCKS

DEFECT INVOLVED

General Motors of Canada has determined that certain 1988 Light Duty K Model Trucks were built with incorrect front shock absorber upper and lower nuts installed. These nuts could loosen, resulting in some noise and if ignored or undetected by the operator, eventual shock absorber detachment at the upper mount will occur. A detached shock absorber could come i n contact with the front brake hose. This contact could result in a leak in the hose with a resulting loss of front brakes. A reduction of braking ability at a time when minimum stopping distance is required could result in a vehicle crash without prior warning.

To prevent this condition from occurring, it will be necessary to replace the existing free spinning nuts with prevailing torque nuts on all involved vehicles.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
