A condition may exist on certain 1988 K models where the front drive axle wiring harness is routed too close to the right exhaust manifold. Due to high manifold temperature, the harness may become damaged.
To repair this condition, a nylon tie strap, P/N 3816659, has been released to hold the harness away from the exhaust manifold.
Beginning with the following VIN breakpoints, 1988 vehicles were produced with the strap installed:
Pontiac East Chevrolet JE101652 Gmc JE5OQ515
Fort Wayne Chevrolet JZ102144 GMC JZ500619
Oshawa Chevrolet sop Gmc sop
Service Procedure
1. Place the tie strap around the battery cable and the front drive axle wiring harness, 70 mm (2-3/8 in) in front of the clamp (Figure 1).
2. Cut the excess off the end of the strap.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
