Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 9290-01 Valve Lifter Remover

  1. Remove the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement (Left Side) or Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement (Right Side) .
  2. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  3. Remove the pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 4576  Size: SH
  5. Remove the valve lifter guide retainer and bolts.

  6. Object Number: 34571  Size: SH
  7. Remove the valve lifters.
  8. 5.1. Remove the valve lifters one at a time.
    5.2. Place the valve lifters in an organizer rack.
    5.3. The valve lifters must be installed in the same bore from which they were removed.
  9. Inspect the valve lifter for scuffing or scoring. If the valve lifter wall is worn or damaged, also check the mating bore in the block.
  10. Check the fit of each valve lifter in its mating bore in the block. If the clearance is excessive, try a new valve lifter.
  11. Inspect the roller for freedom of movement.
  12. Inspect the roller for the following conditions:
  13. • Flat spots
    • Pits
    • Missing or broken needle bearings
  14. If the roller is worn, pitted, or damaged, check the mating camshaft lobe.

Installation Procedure

    Important: 

       • When you install any new valve lifters or a new camshaft, change the engine oil and filter. Add Engine Oil Supplement GM P/N 1052367 or equivalent to the engine oil.
       • Replace all valve lifters when a new camshaft is installed.

  1. Install the valve lifters to the block.
  2. Lubricate the valve lifter roller and the body with high viscosity oil with zinc GM P/N 12345501 or equivalent.

  3. Object Number: 4577  Size: SH
  4. Install the retainer.
  5. Install the bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 16 N·m (12 lb. ft.).

  7. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  8. Install the pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  9. Install the rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement (Left Side) or Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement (Right Side) .
