Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 42371 Quick Connect Disengagement Tool

  1. Shift the transmission into 3rd or 4th speed gear.
  2. Remove the shift lever. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement .
  3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Drain the transmission oil. Refer to Fluid Replacement
  5. If equipped with a transfer case, remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  6. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  7. Remove the exhaust cross over pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.

  8. Object Number: 102888  Size: SH
  9. Use the J 42371 , push back on the white plastic sleeve on the quick connect in order to separate the hydraulic clutch line from the concentric slave cylinder quick connect.
  10. Disconnect the wiring harness and connector from the vehicle speed sensor, backup lamp switch, and transmission harness retainers.

  12. Remove the four bolts securing the clutch housing cover to the transmission.

  14. Remove the bolt securing the left side transmission to engine cover.

  15. Object Number: 395616  Size: SH
  16. Remove the bolt securing the right side transmission to engine cover.
  17. Remove the transmission rear mount.
  18. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.

  20. Remove the bolts and studs securing the transmission to the engine.
  21. Pull the transmission straight back on the clutch hub splines. Do not let the transmission hang from the clutch plate and the clutch cover.
  22. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 395606  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the transmission:
  2. 1.1. Ensure the transmission is positioned in the 3rd or 4th speed gear.
    1.2. Rotate the transmission clockwise onto the clutch hub splines.
    1.3. Install the bolt and the studs securing the transmission to the engine.

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  3. Install the bolt securing the right side transmission to engine cover.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 14 N·m (10 lb ft).

  5. Install the bolt securing the left side transmission to engine cover.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 14 N·m (10 lb ft).

  7. Install the four bolts securing the clutch cover to the transmission.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 14 N·m (10 lb ft).

  9. Install the transmission rear mount.
  10. Install the clutch line to the concentric slave cylinder. Refer to Clutch Concentric Actuator Cylinder Replacement in Clutch.
  11. Install the exhaust cross over pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  12. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  13. If equipped with a transfer case, install the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  14. Fill the transmission with oil. Refer to Fluid Replacement
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Install the shift lever. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement .
