Transmission Housing Oil Seal Replacement Rear Wheel Drive

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to the appropriate procedure:
  3. •  One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
    •  Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
    •  Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.

  4. If the vehicle is equipped with a P model NV4500 transmission, perform the following:
  5. 3.1. Remove the mainshaft nut.
    3.2. Remove the washer.
    3.3. Remove the spline seal.

  6. If the vehicle is equipped with a C model NV4500 transmission, perform the following:
  7. 4.1. Remove the mainshaft nut.
    4.2. Remove the washer.
    4.3. Remove the yoke.

  8. Remove the rear oil seal from the extension housing.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 22834-A Extension Housing Seal Installer


    Object Number: 100952  Size: SH
  1. Using J 22834-A , install the new rear oil seal into the extension housing.

  2. Object Number: 178856  Size: SH
  3. EnsureJ 22834-A is centered on the seal during installation.

  4. Object Number: 100519  Size: SH
  5. If the vehicle is equipped with a P model NV4500 transmission, perform the following:
  6. 3.1. Install the spline seal.
    3.2. Install the washer.
    3.3. Install the mainshaft nut.

  7. If the vehicle is equipped with a C model NV4500 transmission, perform the following:
  8. 4.1. Install the yoke.
    4.2. Install the washer.
    4.3. Install the mainshaft nut.
  9. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to the appropriate procedure in Propeller Shaft:
  10. •  One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
    •  Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
    •  Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
  11. Check the transmission oil level. Refer to Fluid Replacement .
  12. Lower the vehicle.

Transmission Housing Oil Seal Replacement Four Wheel Drive

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 38805 Main Shaft Nut Socket

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the transfer case.

  3. Object Number: 102243  Size: SH
  4. Perform the following steps:
  5. 3.1. Remove the bolts securing the extension housing to the transmission.
    3.2. Remove the extension housing from the transmission.

  6. Remove the mainshaft nut and washer from the mainshaft usingJ 38805 .

  7. Object Number: 100538  Size: SH
  8. Remove the vibration damper from the mainshaft using a suitable gear puller.

  9. Object Number: 100530  Size: SH
  10. Mark the main drive gear bearing retainer and case for alignment.
  11. Remove four bolts securing the main drive gear bearing retainer.
  12. Remove the main drive gear bearing retainer.

  13. Object Number: 100954  Size: SH
  14. Remove the seal from the main drive gear bearing retainer.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 38807 Rear Drive Gear Bearing Retainer Seal Installer
    • J 39314 Vibration Damper Installer
    • J 38805 Main Shaft Nut Socket

    Object Number: 100954  Size: SH
  1. Install the seal into the main drive gear bearing retainer using J 38807 .

  2. Object Number: 101455  Size: SH
  3. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346004 to the main drive gear bearing retainer mating surface.
  4. Ensure the oil hole on the main drive gear bearing retainer is not covered with the sealant.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the main drive gear bearing retainer to the transmission with four bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

  7. Install the vibration damper to the mainshaft usingJ 39314 .

  8. Object Number: 100535  Size: SH
  9. Install the mainshaft washer and nut usingJ 38805 .
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 441 N·m (325 lb ft).


    Object Number: 102243  Size: SH
  11. Install the extension housing to the transmission with eight bolts.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 54 N·m (40 lb ft).

  13. Install the transfer case.
  14. Check the transmission oil level. Refer to Fluid Replacement .
  15. Lower the vehicle.
