Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • GM P/N 12345345 The Rear Window Defogger Repair Kit, or the equivalent
    • J 25070 Heat Gun - capable of reaching 260°C (500°F)

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cables.
  2. Inspect the rear window defogger lines.
  3. Mark the grid line breaks on the outside of the window with a grease pencil.
  4. Clean the grid line area to be repaired.
  5. • Buff the grid line area with steel wool.
    • Wipe clean using a cloth dampened with alcohol.
    • Buff and clean the grid line area about 6 mm (0.25 in) beyond each side of the break in the grid line.
    • Ensure that the glass is at room temperature.

Installation Procedure

Notice: The grid line repair material must be cured with heat. To avoid heat damage to the interior trim, protect the trim near the repair area where heat is to be applied.

  1. Install the grid line repair template or 2 strips of tape positioned above and below the repair area. Use the repair template or the tape in order to control the width of the repair area. Ensure that the die cut metering slot is the same width as the grid line, when the template is used.
  2. Use a small brush to install the grid repair material at room temperature to the repair area.
  3. Remove the template or the tape carefully.
  4. Hold the J 25070 25-30 mm (1-2 in) from the repair area. Apply the heat at 260-370°C (500-700°F) for 2-3 minutes. If a heat gun is not available, allow the repair to air dry at an ambient temperature of 20-39°C (70-90°F) for 24 hours.
  5. Install the negative battery cables.
  6. Inspect the grid line repair area. If the repair appears discolored, use a pipe cleaner or a fine brush in order to apply a coat of tincture of iodine to the repair area. Allow the iodine to dry for about 30 seconds and carefully wipe off the excess with a lint-free cloth.
  7. Test the defogger operation to verify the grid line repair.
  8. Leave the grid area untouched for 24  hours.
