Starter Replacement Gas, 7.4L

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 413049  Size: SH

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support with suitable safety stands.
  3. Disconnect the battery positive cable and wiring harness from the starter.

  4. Object Number: 84599  Size: SH
  5. Remove the starter mounting bolts and washers (with the shims, if equipped).
  6. Remove the starter.

  8. Remove the starter heat shield as necessary.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 105380  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the starter heat shield as necessary to the starter.
  2. Tighten

        • Tighten the starter shield bolts to 3 N·m (35 lb in).
        • Tighten the starter shield nut to 5 N·m (44 lb in).

  3. Install the starter to the engine with shims as necessary.
  4. Install the starter mounting bolts and washers through the starter to the engine.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the starter mounting bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  6. Install the wiring harness and the battery positive cable to the starter.
  7. Tighten

    1. Tighten the battery positive cable to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
    2. Tighten the ignition switch wires to the solenoid to 2 N·m (18 lb in).
  8. Remove the stands and lower the vehicle.
  9. Connect the battery negative cable.

Starter Replacement Gas, 5.0L or 5.7L

Removal Procedure

  5. Remove the starter mounting bolts and washers (with the shims, if equipped).
  6. Remove the starter.

  8. Note the position of the snap-on shield and then remove the shield as necessary.

  1. Install the starter mounting bolts and washers, through the starter to the engine.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the starter mounting bolts to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  3. Install the wiring harness and the battery positive cable to the starter.
  4. Tighten

        • Tighten the battery cable to the solenoid to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
        • Tighten the ignition switch wires to the solenoid to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  5. Install the snap-on starter shield as necessary. Ensure that the shield is aligned properly.
  6. Remove the stands and lower the vehicle.
  7. Connect the battery negative cable.

Starter Replacement Diesel, 6.5L

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component.   1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support with suitable safety stands.
  3. Disconnect the battery positive cable and the wiring harness from the starter.

  5. Remove the starter mounting bolts and washers.
  6. Remove the bracket nut and washer.
  7. Remove the starter. A starter shield bolts to the engine.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the starter to the engine.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure.   3. Install the bracket nut and washer to the bracket over the end of the starter.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bracket nut to 8 N·m (6 lb ft).

  5. Install the starter mounting bolts and washers, if equipped, through the starter to the engine.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the starter mounting through bolts to 45 N·m (35 lb ft).

  7. Connect the battery positive cable and the wiring harness to the starter.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 11 N·m (100 lb in).

  9. Remove the stands and lower the vehicle.
  10. Connect the battery negative cable.
