Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the transfer case shield. Refer to Shield Replacement .

  2. Object Number: 177160  Size: SH
  3. Remove the transfer case wiring harness connectors from the motor/encoder.

  4. Object Number: 177164  Size: SH
  5. Remove the four bolts that secure the motor/encoder to the transfer case.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 177164  Size: SH
  1. Install the with a motor/encoder.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the four bolts securing the motor/encoder to the transfer case.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the motor/encoder bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    • Remove all gasket material remaining from the motor/encoder.
    • Ensure the motor/encoder aligns properly with the transfer case interior shifting components.
    • Align the motor/encoder mating surface detent with the transfer case mating surface detent.

  5. Install the wiring harness connectors to the motor/encoder.
  6. Install the transfer case shield. Refer to Shield Replacement .
  7. Operate the vehicle while pressing each of the buttons on the transfer case shift control switch in order to test the electronic shift system. If the vehicle does not operate properly, refer to Diagnostic Starting Point - Transfer Case .
