Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the oil filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement

  3. Object Number: 391869  Size: SH
  4. Use the following procedure to remove the oil filter adapter for a Four Wheel Drive vehicle:
  5. 3.1. Remove the oil filter adapter bolts.
    3.2. Remove the oil filter adapter and gasket.
    3.3. Remove the seal (O-ring) from the adapter.

  6. Using a prying tool, remove the oil filter bypass valve. Be careful not to damage the engine block.
  7. Clean and inspect valve bore for damage.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 188023  Size: SH

    Caution: Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage.

  1. Using a drift that is the same outside diameter of the oil filter bypass valve, install a NEW oil filter bypass valve.
  2. 1.1. Install the bypass valve into the oil gallery bore until slightly below flush with the surface of the engine block.
    1.2. Using a pointed punch, stake the block area around the oil filter bypass valve.

    Stake in three locations 120 degrees apart.

  3. Install a NEW seal (O-ring) into the groove in the oil filter adapter, Four Wheel Drive vehicles only.

  5. Install the oil filter adapter and NEW gasket to the engine, Four Wheel Drive vehicles only.
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the oil filter adapter bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the oil filter adapter bolts to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  9. Install the oil filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement
  10. Lower the vehicle.
