Problem

Action

The steering gear mounting is loose.

  1. Inspect the mounting hardware on the steering gear.
  2. Tighten the hardware to specifications. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications .

The steering linkage is loose.

  1. Inspect the linkage pivot points for wear. Refer to Steering Linkage Inspection in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).
  2. Replace any worn component.

The pressure hose is touching other parts of the vehicle.

Adjust the hose position. Do not bend the tubing by hand.

The pitman arm is loose.

Tighten the pitman arm nut.

Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).

The over-center adjustment is improper.

A slight rattle may occur on turns because of an increased clearance off the high point. This is a normal condition. Do not reduce the clearance below the specified limit in an attempt to eliminate this slight rattle.

Adjust to specifications. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications .
