Action

The flexible coupling is pulled apart.

  1. Align the column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement
  2. Replace the flexible coupling. Refer to Steering Column Replacement

The column is not correctly aligned.

Align the column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement

There is 1 click in the OFF-UNLOCK position and when the steering wheel is moved.

One click is normal.

The horn contact ring is not lubricated.

Lubricate the horn contact ring.

Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

The bearings or the bearing surfaces lack grease.

Lubricate the bearings.

Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Disassemble - Off Vehicle for upper bearing lubrication.

Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle for lower bearing lubrication.

The lower shaft bearing is tight or frozen.

  1. Replace the bearing. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle
  2. Inspect the shaft.
  3. Replace the shaft if the shaft is scored. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle

The upper shaft bearing is tight or frozen.

Replace the tilt head assembly.

Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

The lock plate retaining ring is not seated.

  1. Replace the retaining ring. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  2. Inspect for proper seating in the groove.

The steering shaft snap ring is not seated.

  1. Replace the snap ring. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  2. Inspect for proper seating in the groove.

The shroud or housing is loose.

Tighten the mounting screws. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers - Assemble - Off Vehicle

The steering shaft plastic joint is sheared.

  1. Replace the steering shaft assembly. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  2. Align the column.
