PROPER AIR COMPRESSOR INSTALLATION TO CATERPILLAR 3116 DIESEL ENGINES IS SENSITIVE TO THE BOLT INSTALLATION AND TORQUE SEQUENCE METHOD USED. THE PROPER INSTALLATION AND TORQUE SEQUENCE PROCEDURE IS DETAILED BELOW.
1. INSTALL AND TORQUE BOLTS (ITEM 1) THAT ATTACH THE TIMING GEAR COVER ASSEMBLY TO THE FRONT GEAR HOUSING (ITEM 2) AND AIR COMPRESSOR (ITEM 3). TORQUE BOLTS TO 90 - 110 N.M (66 - 81 LB FT). 2. INSTALL BOLTS (ITEM 4) THAT ATTACH THE AIR COMPRESSOR BRACKET (ITEM 6) TO THE AIR COMPRESSOR (ITEM 3) FINGER TIGHT. THE BOLTS SHOULD BE A TIGHT FIT BUT THE BRACKET SHOULD STILL BE ABLE TO MOVE. 3. INSTALL BOLTS (ITEM 7) THAT ATTACH THE AIR COMPRESSOR AND AIR COMPRESSOR BRACKET ASSEMBLY TO THE ENGINE BLOCK FINGER TIGHT. 4. TORQUE BOLTS (ITEM 4) THAT ATTACH THE AIR COMPRESSOR BRACKET (ITEM 6) TO THE AIR COMPRESSOR (ITEM 3). TORQUE BOLTS TO 59 - 75 N.M (44 - 55 LB FT). 5. TORQUE BOLTS (ITEM 7) THAT ATTACH THE AIR COMPRESSOR AND AIR COMPRESSOR BRACKET ASSEMBLY TO THE ENGINE BLOCK. TORQUE BOLTS TO 59 - 75 N.M (44 - 55 LB FT).
