FUEL & LUBRICATING REQ'MENTS FOR MED. DUTY DIESELS ENGINES

ATTACHED IS PUBLICATION, "FUEL AND LUBRICATING OILS FOR DETROIT DIESEL ENGINES," FORM 7SE270 (REV. 12/80). THIS SUPERSEDES THE PREVIOUS SPECIFICATION DATED 12/79 AND SERVICE INFORMATION 44-D-80 DATED 7/28/80. THE MOST APPARENT CHANGE IN THIS REVISION IS THAT FUEL AND LUBRICATING OIL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BOTH 2-CYCLE AND 4-CYCLE ENGINES HAVE BEEN COMBINED. OTHER SIGNIFICANT CHANGES AND/OR HIGHLIGHTS ARE AS FOLLOWS: FUEL SECTION 1.THE EFFECTS OF FUEL OIL SULFUR CONTENT, DISTILLATION END POINT, IGNITION QUALITY, AND CLOUD POINT ARE COVERED IN DETAIL. 2.AN ASTM, FEDERAL, MILITARY AND NATO DESIGNATED FUELS CHART HAS BEEN ADDED. 3.DETROIT DIESEL ALLISON CONTINUES TO APPROVE THE USE OF ASTM D-975 GRADE 1D AND 2D DIESEL FUEL, BUT NOT THE PROPOSED GRADE 3D DIESEL FUEL. LUBRICATING OIL SECTION 1.DETROIT DIESEL ALLISON RECOMMENDS THE USE OF SINGLE GRADE SAE40 AND SAE30 LUBRICANTS PROVIDING THEY MEET THE DESCRIBED LIMITS. 2.DETROIT DIESEL ALLISON DOES NOT RECOMMEND THE USE OF 15W-40 AND ALL OTHER MULTI-GRADE OILS FOR SERIES 149 ENGINES. RESTRAINED USAGE IS ADVISED IN SERIES 53, 71 AND 92 ENGINES. 3.LUBRICANTS MEETING API SERVICE CLASSIFICATION CC/SE AND CD/SE ARE RECOMMENDED FOR THE FUEL PINCHER ENGINE. 4.EVIDENCE OF SATISFACTORY LUBRICANT PERFORMANCE IN DETROIT DIESEL ENGINES SHOULD BE OBTAINED FROM THE OIL SUPPLIER PRIOR TO PROCUREMENT. 5.USED LUBE OIL ANALYSIS PROGRAMS AND OIL PERFORMANCE FIELD TESTING ARE RECOMMENDED. 6.OIL DRAIN INTERVALS SHOULD BE SHORTENED WHEN HIGH SULFUR FUELS ARE USED.
