A/C COMPRESSOR CLUTCH MOUNTING SERVICE PROCEDURE OUTLINED

EFFECTIVE WITH SOP 1981, THE COMPRESSOR CLUTCH IS ATTACHED WITH BOTH ADHESIVE AND A SNAP RING FOR IMPROVED RETENTION. THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS AND PROCEDURES APPLY TO THESE CLUTCH COILS BONDED TO THE COMPRESSOR FRONT HEAD BY "LOCTITE" ADHESIVE. I.REMOVAL OF "ADHESIVE MOUNTED" CLUTCH COIL COMPRESSOR MAY BE LEFT MOUNTED ON THE VEHICLE OR PLACED IN THE COMPRESSOR HOLDING FIXTURE IN A SHOP VISE. 1.REMOVE THE CLUTCH COIL RETAINING RING. 2.USING A LARGE SCREWDRIVER OR SMALL PRY BAR, PRY THE CLUTCH COIL AWAY FROM THE FRONT HEAD. IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO HAND IMPACT A BLOW TO THE SCREWDRIVER HANDLE OR PRY BAR TO BREAK THE ADHESIVE BOND OF THE CLUTCH COIL TO THE FRONT HEAD. 3.CLEAN FRONT HEAD AND COIL AREAS AS DESCRIBED IN SECTION II. II.ADHESIVE REMOVAL AND CLEAN-UP IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO REMOVE ALL TRACES OF THE OLD ADHESIVE BY SCRAPING THE AREA WITH A PUTTY KNIFE, SCREWDRIVER OR SIMILAR TOOL THAT WILL REMOVE THE OLD ADHESIVE FROM THE SURFACES TO BE BONDED TOGETHER. IN ADDITION TO THE FLAT SURFACES, PARTICULAR ATTENTION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO CLEANING THE COIL LOCATOR HOLE AREAS OF THE FRONT HEAD AND AROUND THE THREE CLUTCH COIL LOCATOR PROTRUSIONS AT THE REAR OF THE CLUTCH COIL HOUSING. OLD ADHESIVE MATERIAL LEFT AT THESE LOCATIONS CAN PREVENT THE CLUTCH COIL FROM FULLY SEATING ON THE FRONT HEAD SUFFICIENTLY TO PERMIT INSTALLATION OF THE CLUTCH COIL RETAINING RING. EITHER "LOCTITE DEPEND", "LOCTITE TRIM AND DETAIL ADHESIVE" OR THE EQUIVALENT MAY BE USED. ONE OF TWO METHODS FOR APPLYING THE ADHESIVE MAY BE SELECTED DEPENDING ON WHETHER THE COMPRESSOR IS REMOVED FROM OR REMAINS ON THE VEHICLE. THE AREAS OF THE FRONT HEAD IN AND AROUND THE CLUTCH COIL LOCATOR PROJECTIONS ON THE REAR OF THE COIL HOUSING SHOULD BE CLEANED USING A RECOMMENDED SOLVENT (TRICHLOROETHANE , NAPTHA, STODDARD SOLVENT OR KEROSENE) BEFORE APPLYING THE ADHESIVE AND ADHESIVE ACTUATOR TO THE PARTS. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS AND CAUTIONARY INFORMATION INCLUDED WITH THE ADHESIVE SHOULD BE READ AND PRECAUTIONS TAKEN ACCORDINGLY. AFTER ASSEMBLY OF THE CLUTCH COIL TO THE FRONT HEAD WITH ADHESIVE, ALL CLUTCH PARTS MAY BE ASSEMBLED TO THE COMPRESSOR, THE COMPRESSOR MOUNTED IN PLACE ON THE VEHICLE, THE DRIVE BELT INSTALLED AND ADJUSTED FOR PROPER TENSION. ALLOW 30 MINUTES "SET TIME" FOR THE ADHESIVE. THE "SET TIME" INTERVAL TO BE FROM THE TIME THE CLUTCH COIL IS ASSEMBLED TO THE FRONT HEAD UNTIL THE VEHICLE ENGINE IS STARTED AND OPERATED. III.ADHESIVE APPLICATION - COMPRESSOR OFF VEHICLE 1.CLEAN AREAS OF FRONT HEAD AND REAR OF CLUTCH COIL HOUSING AS DESCRIBED IN SECTION II. PARTS MUST BE DRY. 2.POSITION COMPRESSOR "SHAFT END UP" AND FILL THE THREE CLUTCH COIL LOCATOR HOLES WITH ADHESIVE AS SHOWN IN THE DIAGRAM OF THE FRONT HEAD. SEE CROSS SECTIONAL VIEW. 3.APPLY THE ADHESIVE ACTIVATOR TO THE CLUTCH COIL LOCATORS AND THE AREA IMMEDIATELY SURROUNDING THE LOCATOR PROTRUSIONS AT THE REAR OF THE CLUTCH COIL HOUSING. 4.ASSEMBLE THE CLUTCH COIL TO THE FRONT HEAD AND INSTALL THE CLUTCH COIL RETAINING RING. CHECK TO MAKE SURE RETAINER RING SEATS IN RING GROOVE. WIPE AWAY ANY EXCESS ADHESIVE THAT MAY BE FORCED TO AN EXTERIOR SURFACE. IV.ADHESIVE APPLICATION - COMPRESSOR ON VEHICLE 1.CLEAN AREAS OF FRONT HEAD AND REAR OF CLUTCH COIL HOUSING AS DESCRIBED IN SECTION II. PARTS MUST BE DRY. 2.APPLY THE ADHESIVE ACTIVATOR TO THE AREA IN AND AROUND THE CLUTCH COIL LOCATOR HOLES IN THE FRONT HEAD. 3.PLACE THE CLUTCH COIL "FACE DOWN" ON A FLAT SURFACE. APPLY THE ADHESIVE IN A CIRCULAR BEAD AROUND THE THREE COIL LOCATOR PROTRUSIONS SIMILAR TO THAT INDICATED IN THE VIEWS OF THE CLUTCH COIL. THE MATERIAL SHOULD OVERLAP THE LOCATOR PROTRUSION SIMILAR TO THAT SHOWN IN THE CROSS SECTIONAL VIEW. 4.ASSEMBLE THE CLUTCH COIL TO THE FRONT HEAD AND INSTALL THE CLUTCH COIL RETAINING RING. CHECK TO MAKE SURE RETAINER RING SEATS IN RING GROOVE. WIPE AWAY ANY EXCESS ADHESIVE THAT MAY BE FORCED TO AN EXTERIOR SURFACE. 5.ASSEMBLE REMAINDER OF CLUTCH PARTS ACCORDING TO SERVICE MANUAL PROCEDURE.
