Most medium duty generators have an externally energized field utilizing the No. 1 and No. 2 generator terminals and a separate wiring harness equipped with a two-way connector (Figure No. 1). However, the 27-SI Type 200 generator is self energizing and does NOT require this harness (Figure No. 2). When the 27-SI Type 200 generator is used, the "extra" wires are taped back on the harness. If the taped back portion of the harness is connected to a Type 200 generator in error, the voltage regulator may be damaged and the batteries may discharge.
Type 200 generators are used only with diesel engines and are identified as follows:

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
