CAMPAIGN: UNGREASED KING PIN THRUST BEARING (REPLACE W/NEW)

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT SOME EARLY 1987 MEDIUM AND HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH 12,000# FRONT AXLES (RPO F54, FS7, OR FT7) WERE BUILT WITH UNGREASED KINGPIN THRUST BEARINGS. THESE BEARINGS HAVE ONLY A THIN FILM OF OIL FOR CORROSION RESISTANCE WHICH IS NOT SUFFICIENT FOR LONG TERM DURABILITY. TO PREVENT THE POSSIBILITY OF PREMATURE KINGPIN THRUST BEARING FAILURE IT IS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THESE BEARINGS WITH PERMANENTLY GREASED BEARINGS. VEHICLES INVOLVED INVOLVED ARE CERTAIN 1987 C7, J8, J9, D9, AND N9 MODELS WITH 12,000# FRONT AXLES (RPO F54, FS7, OR FT7) BUILT WITHIN THE FOLLOWING VIN BREAKPOINTS: MODEL YEAR FROM THROUGH 1987 HV500498 HV502801 THE SPECIFIC VEHICLES INVOLVED IN THIS CAMPAIGN HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED BY VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER COMPUTER LISTINGS. General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
