Some owners of 1990-1991 TopKick/Kodiak Trucks with manual transmissions (RPO MSA and MSC) and hydraulic brakes (RPO JE3) may experience a loosening of the bolts fastening the transmission case to the engine clutch housing.
Some owners of these vehicles may also experience loosening of the bolts fastening the support plate to the rear bearing retainer at the rear of the transmission.
To correct these conditions, retaining compound (P/N 12345493 (Loctite) can be added to the bolts which fasten the transmission to the engine clutch housing and to the bolts that fasten the support plate to the rear bearing retainer at the rear of the transmission.
1. Remove the four bolts that fasten the transmission to the engine clutch housing and the four bolts that fasten the support plate to the rear bearing retainer at the rear of the transmission (Figure 1).
2. Coat the threads of the eight hex bolts with primer from the retaining compound kit (P/N 12345493 (Locktite) or equivalent).
3. After the primer has dried, coat the bolt threads with retaining compound from the retaining compound kit.
4. On 1991 models - install the transmission case to engine clutch housing fastener bolts and torque to 122-162 N-m (90-120 lbs.ft.).
On 1990 models - install the transmission case to engine clutch housing fastener bolts and torque to 75-100 N-m (55-75 lbs. ft.).
5. Install the bolts that fasten the support plate to the rear bearing retainer at the rear of the transmission and torque to 86 N-m (63 lbs. ft.).

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
