A new exhaust manifold/turbocharger heat shield has been released and is available for service on the above vehicles that may develop slightly elevated underhood (UH) temperatures. The 275 and 300 hp Cat® diesel engine may develop elevated underhood temperatures when used primarily in selected vocational applications.

Install this new heat shield, P/N 15762633, for drivers who may request it. Refer to the following procedure. Use the part numbers listed below. This shield bolts to the side of the cylinder head and also attaches to the top of the exhaust pipe with a stainless steel worm clamp.

  1. Tilt the cab forward.

  2. Object Number: 688169 Size: MH

Important: Ensure that the exhaust pipe clamp screw does not contact the shield when installed. In order to avoid contact with the shield and the exhaust pipe clamp, reposition the exhaust pipe clamp as necessary.

  3. Place the heat shield (2) on the rear RH side of the engine block (6) as shown.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping compound force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the two washers and the attachment bolts (1) through the shield and into the engine block.
  6. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  7. Install the worm clamp (4) around the exhaust pipe (5) and the heat shield (2).
  8. Tighten
Tighten the clamp to 3 N·m (26 lb in).

  9. Close the cab.
