POWER STEERING PUMP O-RING CHANGE

1985 LIGHT DUTY MODELS EXCEPT M VAN, S/T TRUCKS WITH RPO LN8 OR LQ7, OR G VANS WITH RPO LT9 AND H5D.

Power steering pumps on some 1985 models have revised "square cut" seals which provide the seal between the reservoir and the housing at the reservoir mounting bolt hole(s) and at the pressure line fitting (Figure No. 1). This change is effective with early 1985 production on all submerged pump assemblies (pump assemblies enclosed within reservoir).

The new seal is approximately twice as thick as the old one and requires a deeper counterbore in the housing. Consequently, new seals will not fit the old housings and old seals will not provide an adequate repair when used with the new housing. The new housing will be the only one provided for service from WDDGM. Both old and new seals will be provided in each appropriate reservoir kit and in a new seal service kit, P/N 7848522, which will replace the present kit, P/N 5688044.

These kits will contain an instruction sheet which shows the method of identifying the new housing, and shows the difference between the new and old seal (Figure No. 1).

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
