CROSSMEMBER TO BELL HOUSING INTERFERENCE-NEW P/N RELEASED

SUBJECT: CROSSMEMBER TO BELL HOUSING INTERFERENCE

MODELS: 1987 MEDIUM DUTY TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH AN 8.2L DIESEL ENGINE, RPO LH3/LH4, AND A 5 or 10 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION

Some 1987 medium duty trucks equipped with an 8.2L diesel engine and a 5 or 10 speed manual transmission may experience an interference condition between the engine rear crossmember (belly band) and the bell housing, resulting in excessive noise levels in the cab.

To repair this condition, it will be necessary to remove and discard the engine rear crossmember and replace it with a new one located approximately 26" rearward of the existing crossmember. This new crossmember will be secured to the outside of the frame rails and will utilize existing holes in the frame rail web.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

o Apply parking brake and disconnect the negative battery cable.

o Remove the engine noise shield attached on each frame rail.

o Remove the starter motor to gain access to the crossmember bolts on the left hand frame rail. It is not necessary to disconnect the wiring harness.

o Remove and discard the crossmember and attaching hardware.

o Locate the mounting holes for the new cross- member. These holes are approximately 44" behind the center line of the front axle. A frame material identification hole is located in the web section of the frame rail at the center line of the front axle. On vehicles equipped with frame reinforcements (RPO F05, F06, or F07), the reinforcement to frame rivets will have to be drilled out from the existing holes to install the crossmember (Figure No. 1 and Figure No. 2).

o Remove the clutch pivot bracket from the LH frame rail at the new crossmember location.

o Install new crossmember. (The clutch pivot mounting bracket will share a mounting hole with the crossmember.) Torque 10 mm prevailing torque nuts (PTNs) to 45 Nm (34 lb ft), 12 mm PTNs to 71 Nm (52 lb ft), and 8 mm PTNs to 23 Nm (17 lb ft).

o Reinstall starter motor, torque bolts to 135 Nm (100 lb ft).

o Reinstall noise shields.

o Reconnect battery cable.

This procedure can be accomplished in approximately 3.9 hours.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
