J 23523-F Balancer Remover and Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Evacuate the air conditioning system, if equipped. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  2. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Engine Electrical.
  3. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  4. Remove the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  5. Remove the engine cooling fan and the fan shroud. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  6. Remove the radiator grille. Refer to Grille Replacement in Body Front End.
  7. Remove the hood latch bracket. Refer to Hood Latch Replacement in Body Front End.
  8. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  9. Remove the A/C condenser, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  10. Remove the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  11. Remove the three crankshaft pulley bolts and the crankshaft pulley. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  12. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  13. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  16. Remove the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Reluctor Ring Replacement .

  17. Object Number: 344371  Size: SH
  18. Rotate the number one piston to Top Dead Center (TDC).
  19. Align the timing marks on the camshaft and the crankshaft sprockets.

  20. Object Number: 182836  Size: SH
  21. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts.
  22. Remove the camshaft sprocket and the camshaft timing chain. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  23. Remove the camshaft retainer plate and bolts using a T-30 TORX® socket.

  25. Remove the camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Removal.
  26. Clean all sealing surfaces.
  27. Inspect all parts for wear. Refer to Camshaft and Bearings Clean and Inspect.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 344428  Size: SH
  1. Install the camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Installation.
  2. Install the components removed from the front of the engine. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Install the fasteners to the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
  5. Lower the vehicle.

  7. Use the J 23523-F in order to install the crankshaft balancer.
  8. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .

  9. Install the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  10. Install the A/C condenser, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC.
  11. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling
  12. Install the hood latch bracket. Refer to Hood Latch Replacement in Body Front End.
  13. Install the radiator grille. Refer to Grille Replacement in Body Front End.
  14. Install the engine cooling fan and the upper fan shroud. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  15. Install the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  16. Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to Lower Intake Manifold Replacement .
  17. Install the valve rocker arms and push valve rods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  18. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Engine Electrical.
  19. Replace the engine oil filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
