Red Reflective Letter Detaches from Nameplate (Affix New Reflective Letter)

Subject:Red Reflective Letter Detaches From Nameplate (Affix New Reflective Letter)

Models:1997-2002 GMC F-Model (T-Series) Medium Duty Tilt Cab Models
1997-2002 GMC W-Series Medium Duty Tilt Cab Models

Condition

The GMC divisional nameplate affixed below the windshield at the front of the cab has red reflective letters attached. On some of the vehicles listed above, some customers/dealers may comment that the red, reflective letter(s) become detached and fall off of the nameplate.

Cause

Poor adhesion between the letter and the nameplate may cause this condition.

Correction

New individual red reflective letters are now available as a service replacement. The new letters have doubled-sided tape on the back and can be affixed on the existing nameplate. Previously, only a complete service nameplate assembly was available.

Affix a new replacement letter on the affected vehicle using the following procedure. Use the applicable part number listed below.

Important:

   • If more than one letter at a time needs to be replaced, or if the vehicle has returned to the dealership with multiple repair occurrences, replace the complete nameplate assembly.
   • When the reflective letter needs to be replaced, make sure that the nameplate surface is clean and dry before affixing the letter. Refer to the Emblem/Nameplate Replacement procedure in the Exterior Trim sub-section of the Service Information.

  1. Apply a release agent such as Kent Special Release Agent, P/N 30125, or equivalent to the old adhesive on the nameplate of the letter that has fallen off. Let the release agent stand for approximately two minutes.
  2. Using the end of a screwdriver or a similar tool, carefully remove the old adhesive from the nameplate. Reapply the release agent as necessary in order to remove all of the adhesive.
  3. Clean the surface of the nameplate after adhesive removal using Naptha or equivalent.
  4. Affix the new letter to the nameplate surface. Apply even hand pressure to fully seat the letter to the nameplate.
