Generator Replacement P72

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 29045  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Remove the wiring harness connector, the nut, and the positive cable from the back of the generator.
  3. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt in Engine Mechanical.
  4. Remove the upper bolt, the rear bolt, the nut, the long bolt, the washer and the generator from the upper brace, the rear brace and the mounting bracket.

    Important: Perform steps 5 through 8 only if removing the upper brace, the rear brace, and the mounting bracket.

  6. Remove the belt tensioner and the upper brace.
  7. Remove the two nuts, the ground cable, the two washers, and the rear brace from the engine studs.

  9. Remove the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering.
  10. Remove the front bolt, the two nuts and the mounting bracket from the studs and the engine block.

Installation Procedure

    Important: Perform steps 1 through 4 only if installing the upper brace, the rear brace, and the mounting bracket.

  1. Install the mounting bracket to the engine block and the studs with the two nuts and the bolt.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts and the bolt to 40 N·m (29.5 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering.

  4. Object Number: 29043  Size: SH
  5. Install the rear brace, the two washers, the ground cable and the two nuts on the engine studs.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 40 N·m (29.5 lb ft).

  7. Install the belt tensioner and the upper brace.

  8. Object Number: 29045  Size: SH
  9. Install the generator on the braces and the mounting bracket with the upper bolt, the rear bolt, the nut, the long bolt, and the washer.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18.4 lb ft).

    Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 23.5 N·m (17.3 lb ft).

  11. Install the drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt in Engine Mechanical.
  12. Install the wiring harness connector, the positive cable, and the nut to the back of the generator.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  14. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

  2. Remove the nuts, the positive and negative cables, and the small leads from the back of the generator.
  3. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt in Engine Mechanical.

  5. Remove the upper bolt and the nut from the upper brace.
  6. Remove the lower bolt, the nut, and the generator from the mounting bracket.
  7. Important: Perform step 6 only if removing the upper brace.

  8. Remove the two bolts and the upper brace from the engine block.

Installation Procedure

    Important: Perform step 1 only if installing the upper brace.

  1. Install the upper brace on the engine block with the two bolts.
  2. Install the generator on the mounting bracket with the bolt and the nut.
  3. Install the generator on the upper brace with the bolt and the nut.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the generator mounting bolts to 70 N·m (50 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure.   6. Connect the positive and negative cables and the small leads on the terminals on the back of the generator.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the positive and negative cable mounting nuts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  8. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
