Removal Procedure

J 39046 Torsional Damper Puller

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  3. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
  4. Remove the bolts and the crankshaft pulley.

  5. Object Number: 59837  Size: SH
  6. Remove the torsional damper bolt and the washer.

  7. Object Number: 59839  Size: SH
  8. Remove the torsional damper using J 39046 .
  9. Pry out the front crankshaft seal using a screwdriver.

Installation Procedure

J 22102 Seal Installer


    Object Number: 59839  Size: SH
  1. Use J 22102 to install a new front crankshaft seal. Lubricate the seal lips with engine oil.
  2. Apply engine oil to the crankshaft stub.
  3. Inspect the torsional damper sealing surface for grooving or roughness. Replace if necessary.
  4. Install the torsional damper by tapping it into place with a mallet.
  5. The key must be in place and the damper all the way on the crankshaft.

  6. Install the torsional damper bolt and the washer.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 270 N·m (200 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the crankshaft pulley and the bolts.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Install the accessory drive belt.
  12. Connect the negative battery cable.
