Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 6627-A Wheel Stud Puller
and Tie Rod Remover
NOTICE: Do not attempt to free the ball stud by using a pickle fork or a wedge-type
tool. Seal or bushing damage could result. Use the proper tool in order to
separate all the ball joints.
- Remove the cotter pins and castellated nuts
from the tie rod or steering link rod assemblies.
- Remove the washer at the steering knuckle end of the steering
link rod.
- UsingJ 6627-A
remove
the outer ball studs from the steering knuckles.
- Loosen the adjuster sleeve clamp bolts.
- Remove the tie rod ends.
- Count the number of turns needed to remove the tie rod ends from
the adjuster tube.
- Note the position of the adjuster tube and the direction from
which the bolts are installed.
Inspection Procedure
• | Inspect the tie rod or the steering link rod for bending or damaged
threads. |
• | Inspect the tie rod end seals for wear. |
• | Inspect the ball stud for damaged threads. |
• | Inspect the adjuster tube for bending or damaged threads. |
Cleaning Procedure
• | Clean the tapered surfaces. |
• | Clean the threads on the ball studs and in the ball stud castellated
nut. |
Installation Procedure
- If the tie rod ends were removed, lubricate
the threads with chassis lubricant.
- Install the tie rod end to the tie rod or steering link rod.
- Thread the tie rod end into the adjuster tube. Turn the tie rod
the same number of turns that were counted in the removal procedure.
- Install the outer ball stud to the steering
knuckle.
- Install the castellated nut to the ball
stud.
Tighten
Tighten the castellated nut to 95 N·m (70 lb ft).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Advance the castellated nut to align the slot with the cotter
pin hole. Do not back the nut off to align the cotter pin hole.
- Install the washer at the steering knuckle end of the steering
rod link.
- Install a cotter pin after the castellated
nut is tightened.
- Adjust the toe-in. Refer to Toe-in in Wheel Alignment.
Tighten
Tighten the adjuster clamp bolt to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).
