Removal Procedure

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Evacuate the air conditioning system, if equipped. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in HVAC.
  3. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .

  5. Remove the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .

  6. Object Number: 72749  Size: SH
  7. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  8. Remove the A/C condenser, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC.
  9. Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  11. Remove the camshaft sprocket and the timing chain. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  12. Remove the camshaft retainer plate and bolts using a T-30 Torx® socket.

    Notice: All camshaft journals are the same diameter, so care must be used in removing or installing the camshaft to avoid damage to the camshaft bearings.

  14. Remove the engine camshaft.
  15. 10.1. Install the three 5/16-18 x 4.0 inch bolts in the engine camshaft front bolt holes.
    10.2. Using the bolts as a handle carefully rotate and pull the engine camshaft out of the camshaft bearings.
    10.3. Remove the bolts from the front of the engine camshaft.
  16. Clean all sealing surfaces.
  17. Inspect all parts for wear. Refer to Camshaft and Bearings Clean and Inspect .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Installation .

  2. Object Number: 344368  Size: SH
  3. Install the components removed from the front of the engine. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  4. Install the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  5. Object Number: 199015  Size: SH
  6. Install the A/C condenser, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC.
  7. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  8. Object Number: 11509  Size: SH
  9. Install the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  10. Recharge the air conditioning system, if equipped. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in HVAC.
  11. Fill the engine with the proper type and quantity of engine oil.
  12. Replace the engine oil filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement
  13. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
