Removal Procedure

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the fan shroud from the radiator. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  3. Remove the drive belt from the vehicle. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  4. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  6. Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .

  8. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the engine front cover.

  10. Remove the water pump from the engine block. Refer to Water Pump Removal .

  12. Remove the bolts that retain the oil pan to the engine front cover.
  13. Important: Mark the fuel line clips so that the clips can be re-installed on the proper studs.

  14. Remove the fuel line clips from the studs.

  16. Remove the fuel injection drive gear from the camshaft. Refer to the appropriate procedure in Engine Controls:

  18. Remove the inner bolts from the engine front cover.

  19. Object Number: 60272  Size: SH
  20. Remove the bolts from the engine front cover.

  21. Object Number: 59864  Size: SH
  22. Remove the engine front cover from the engine block.
  23. Remove the crankshaft front cover oil seal. Refer to Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Replacement .

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 22102 Seal Installer


    Object Number: 60269  Size: SH
  1. Use the J 22102 in order to install a new crankshaft front cover oil seal.

  2. Object Number: 59866  Size: SH
  3. Apply a 2 mm (3/32 in) bead of anaerobic sealant GM P/N 1052357 to the engine front cover.
  4. Apply a 5 mm (3/16 in) bead of RTV sealant GM P/N 12345739 to the sealing surface of the engine front cover that mates with the oil pan.

  6. Install the engine front cover to the engine block.

  7. Object Number: 60272  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the mounting bolts to the engine front cover.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts and the studs to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  10. Install the mounting bolts to the fuel injection pump.

  12. Install the fuel pump drive gear to the camshaft and align the timing marks. Refer to the appropriate procedure in Engine Controls:

  14. Install the water pump to the engine block. Refer to Water Pump Installation
  15. Important: Inspect the marks on the fuel line clips made during removal. Ensure that the fuel line clips are re-installed on the proper studs.

  16. Install the fuel return line clips.

  18. Install the crankshaft position sensor to the engine front cover.

  20. Install the crankshaft balancer to the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  21. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.
  22. Install the drive belt to the vehicle. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  23. Install the fan shroud to the radiator. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  24. Connect the negative battery cable.
  25. Reset the fuel injection pump timing. Refer to the appropriate procedure in Engine Controls:
