Removal Procedure

J 39046 Crankshaft Balancer Remover

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Object Number: 72741  Size: SH
  3. Remove the fan shroud from the radiator. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  4. Remove drive belt from the vehicle. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  5. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  6. Object Number: 70257  Size: SH
  7. Remove the crankshaft pulley retaining bolts.
  8. Remove the crankshaft pulley.

  9. Object Number: 59837  Size: SH
  10. Remove retaining bolt and the washer from the crankshaft balancer.

  11. Object Number: 59839  Size: SH
  12. Use the J 39046 in order to remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft.

Installation Procedure

    Important: Before installing the crankshaft balancer, inspect the oil seal contact area for grooving and roughness. Replace the crankshaft balancer if necessary.

  1. Tap the crankshaft balancer into place with a mallet.
  2. Ensure that the key is in place.
  3. Ensure that the crankshaft balancer is completely installed on the crankshaft.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt and the washer to the crankshaft.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 270 N·m (200 lb ft).

  7. Install the crankshaft pulley and the pulley bolts to the crankshaft.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  9. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.
  10. Install the drive belt in the vehicle. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .

  12. Install the fan shroud to the radiator. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
