Circuit Description

The PCM uses the Baro sensor to monitor atmospheric pressure and then sends a signal back to the PCM. The PCM receives this signal and then calculates fuel delivery.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

    • The PCM performs this DTC diagnostic continuously.
    • The Baro signal is greater than 4.86 volts (202 kPa).
    • All diagnostic set conditions met for 2 seconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The PCM illuminates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) on the second consecutive drive trip that the diagnostic runs and fails.
    • The PCM records the operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. The first time the diagnostic fails, the Failure Records will store this information. If the diagnostic reports a failure on the second consecutive drive trip, the Freeze Frame records the operating conditions at the time of failure and updates the Failure Records.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC

    • The PCM will turn the MIL off after three consecutive trips without a fault condition.
    • A History DTC will clear when forty consecutive warm-up cycles that the diagnostic does not fail (coolant temperature has risen 5°C (40°F) from start up coolant temperature and engine coolant temperature exceeds 71°C (160°F) that same ignition cycle.
    • Use of a Scan Tool

Diagnostic Aids

A malfunctioning Baro sensor can cause excessive smoke at high altitudes.

An intermittent condition may be caused by the following:

    • Poor connections.
    • A rubbed through wire insulation.
    • A broken wire inside of the insulation.

Test Description

Number(s) below refer to the step number(s) on the Diagnostic Table.

  1. This step will determine if the PCM is responding to a low signal voltage. This will indicate that the PCM is OK.

  2. If the scan display is still less than or equal to 9 kPa by disconnecting the PCM the short to voltage is in the wiring.

  3. If the voltmeter value stays the same by disconnecting the PCM the short to battery voltage is in the wiring.

Important: Before clearing any DTCs, use the scan tool Capture Info function to save Freeze Frame and Failure records for reference. The control module's data is deleted once the Clear Info function is used.

  1. Connect a scan tool.
  2. Start the engine and let the engine idle.

Does the scan tool display the Baro sensor greater than or equal to the specified value?

202 kPa

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the Baro sensor electrical connector.
  3. Turn the ignition ON.

Does the scan tool display the Baro sensor less than or equal to the specified value?

9 kPa

The DTC is intermittent. If no additional DTCs are stored, refer to Diagnostic Aids. If additional DTCs are stored, refer to those table(s) first.

  1. Turn the ignition ON leaving the engine OFF
  2. With a J 39200 DMM connected to ground, probe the 5 volt reference circuit at the Baro sensor harness.

Is the voltage greater than the specified value?

5.2V

  1. Verify the Baro sensor is disconnected.
  2. Jumper the Baro sensor ground circuit at the harness with a J 35616-200 unpowered test lamp connected to B+.

Is the test light ON?

  1. Check the Baro sensor for a restriction.
  2. If a problem if found, repair as necessary.

Replace the Baro sensor.

  1. Check for a short to voltage in the Baro sensor signal circuit.
  2. If a problem is found, repair as necessary. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Check for a short to battery voltage in the Baro sensor 5 volt reference circuit.
  2. If a problem is found, repair as necessary. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Important: The new PCM must be programmed. Refer to Powertrain Control Module Replacement/Programming .

  1. Using the scan tool, clear the DTCs.
  2. Start the engine.
  3. Allow the engine to idle until the engine reaches the normal operating temperature.
  4. Select DTC and the Specific DTC function.
  5. Enter the DTC number that was set.
  6. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Setting this DTC until the scan tool indicates the diagnostic Ran.
