Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 26999-10 Compression Gauge Adapter
    •  J 26999-30 Compression Gauge Adapter
    •  J 38606 Valve Spring Compressor

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery.

  2. Object Number: 66611  Size: SH
  3. Remove the valve rocker arm cover from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 59797  Size: SH
  5. Remove the valve rocker arm and shaft from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Shaft, and Push Rod Replacement .

  6. Object Number: 172998  Size: SH
  7. Remove the pushrods from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Shaft, and Push Rod Replacement .

  8. Object Number: 60240  Size: SH
  9. Remove the glow plug from the cylinder being serviced.
  10. • For the L65, refer to Glow Plug Replacement - Left Side or Glow Plug Replacement - Right Side
    • For the L57, refer to Glow Plug Replacement - Left Side or Glow Plug Replacement - Right Side
  11. Rotate the engine until the piston in the cylinder being serviced is at the bottom of the piston stroke.
  12. Use the J 26999-10 for left side of the engine and J 26999-30 for the right side of the engine when applying the compressed air to the cylinder being serviced.
  13. Apply compressed air into the cylinder being serviced.

  15. Tap lightly on the valve spring cap or rotator to loosen the valve keys.
  16. Use the J 38606 in order to compress the valve spring.
  17. Compress the valve spring.
  18. Remove the valve keys from the retainers from the cylinder head.
  19. Carefully release the valve spring tension and remove the J 38606 .
  20. Remove the valve spring, cap, rotator, and shield from the cylinder head.
  21. Remove the valve stem oil seals from the valve stems.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 26999-10 Compression Gauge Adapter
    •  J 26999-30 Compression Gauge Adapter
    •  J 38606 Valve Spring Compressor

Important: The air pressure should remain applied to the cylinder being serviced until after the repair has been completed.

  1. Apply a small amount of clean engine oil to the valve stem and to the new valve stem oil seal.
  2. Install the valve stem oil seals to the valve stems.

  3. Object Number: 59973  Size: SH
  4. Install the valve spring, cap, rotator and shield.
  5. Use the J 38606 to compress the valve spring.
  6. Install the valve keys in the retainer.
  7. Remove the J 38606 from the valve spring.
  8. Slowly release the compressed air from the cylinder being serviced.
  9. Remove the J 26999-10 when working on the left side of the engine or J 26999-30 for the right side of the engine.

  11. Install the glow plug into the cylinder being serviced.
  12. • For the L65, refer to Glow Plug Replacement - Left Side or Glow Plug Replacement - Right Side
    • For the L57, refer to Glow Plug Replacement - Left Side or Glow Plug Replacement - Right Side

    Important: All the valve train components must be reassembled in the exact order and position from which they were removed.

  13. Install the pushrods into the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Shaft, and Push Rod Replacement .
  14. Install the valve rocker arm and shaft to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Shaft, and Push Rod Replacement .

  16. Install the valve rocker arm cover to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  17. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement .
